Summer in New Zealand is all about spending time with family, heading to the beach and throwing sausages on the barbecue. It’s a season to celebrate, adventure and relax. However, the stunning summer weather can create even more frustrations for those who wear glasses and contact lenses...

Glasses start sliding off your face as the sweat builds up, cleaning foggy lenses becomes a full-time task, swimming with or without your glasses is a pain, and the sting of sunblock in your eyes is agonising enough without adding contact lenses to the mix.

What a lot of people don’t actually realise is that there is a type of laser eye surgery that won’t stop you from enjoying those warm summer days - swimming and all!

SMILE® laser vision correction surgery is an easy alternative and a surefire way to help you relax this summer. With minimal recovery time and excellent results, the quick procedure means you’ll be taking full advantage of the sun in no time. You’ll finally be able to wear your favourite pair of sunnies, swim without hesitation, sleep without stress and camp without contacts. All it takes is a 3-minute procedure!

Following surgery, eyes will heal within 48 hours. And with no risk of infection, patients go to the gym, jump in the sea and play sports after just three days.

How does SMILE® work?

SMILE® is a simple procedure that uses a single laser machine to correct short sight. The VisuMax® femtosecond laser creates a lens-shaped piece of tissue in the middle of the cornea and then makes a small 2-3mm keyhole incision to one side. The lens-shaped piece of corneal tissue is then removed through the keyhole incision using a pair of delicate forceps. This flattens the cornea to correct the short sight.

How much does SMILE® cost?

At Wellington Eye Centre, we offer an all-inclusive fee of $3,180 per eye. This cost includes your medical assessment, the surgical procedure itself, as well as post-operative care for up to 12 months from the date of your surgery.

We also have a payment plan available through GEM Visa, giving you access to 24 months interest-free finance for laser eye surgeries.

Check out our Surgery Payback Calculator to determine what our payment plan means for you and whether laser eye surgery can save you money in the long run compared to sticking with your glasses and contact lenses.
