Want the freedom of seeing without spectacles or contact lenses?
LASIK eye surgery
(Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) laser refractive surgery is the most common laser eye surgery performed in the world. Wellington Eye Centre was the first in New Zealand to offer this life changing surgery and pride ourselves on ensuring that we still offer the best option to achieve your visual needs.
LASIK surgery is able to correct hyperopia, myopia, and astigmatism. If you have presbyopia you should consider Laser Blended Vision which is usually achieved using LASIK surgery.
How LASIK is performed
LASIK eye surgery at Wellington Eye Centre utilises two lasers (the VisuMax and the Mel 90 lasers) to create a very thin circular flap which then exposes the corneal tissue underneath. The tissue is reshaped to check your refraction before the flap is smoothed back down into the correct position. We pride ourselves on having the latest technology. That is why the combination of these two world-class lasers means that we have one of the most advanced and sophisticated laser eye surgery systems anywhere.
How long does LASIK surgery take?
It is incredibly quick to have LASIK. The time under the laser is broken down into two parts. The initial step of creating a flap takes 17 seconds. The corneal shaping takes from 5-40 seconds depending on your prescription.
How is LASIK different to the other surgeries?
LASIK is the only two step laser procedure we do. It is able to correct a larger range of refractions than SMILE, including hyperopia and astigmatism patients. SMILE is a keyhole laser procedure and can be considered the latest generation of refractive laser treatment. At present SMILE can only correct myopic and myopic astigmatism corrections. PRK is a procedure that requires more recovery time.

How fast will I be able to see again?
With LASIK, in most cases, your visual sharpness should be already very good one or two days after surgery. Although we can’t guarantee it, as everyone's eyes are different. The majority of our patients are within the legal standards for driving on the day following surgery.
How long does the recovery take?
This varies person to person and is dependent on what you need to be able to visually achieve. We encourage you to take two days off after laser surgery to give yourself time to adapt to your new vision and to avoid causing any strain on your eyes.
Are you suitable for LASIK?
The best way to find out whether you are suitable for LASIK or any of the laser procedures we offer is to book a free assessment. Our highly trained team will take a history of your vision and use the latest technology equipment to get detailed information about your eyes and their suitability for laser surgery. If you are suitable, our experienced surgeon will be able to recommend the best procedure that suits your lifestyle and will achieve the best visual results possible.
